A cigar that has gone out can be relit without trouble, as long as you stay within the same session. First tap off the cold ash, re-toast the foot briefly, then draw gently. Only when a relit cigar tastes harsh or bitter is it no longer worth smoking on.
No need to worry
A cigar going out is normal, especially if you smoke it slowly and set it down for a while. It is no reason to throw it away. What matters is how you bring it back to life, and how you tell when the rest is better left alone.
How to relight a cigar that has gone out
- Tap off the ash. Remove the cold, spent ash completely. It blocks airflow and tastes stale when you relight.
- Blow through the foot. Gently blow once through the cigar, from the head to the foot. This clears stale smoke and stuffy residue from inside.
- Re-toast briefly. Hold the foot over the flame as you did the first time, without touching it, and turn it until the rim glows evenly again.
- Draw gently. Draw slowly while turning. The cigar catches quickly if it is still warm.
- Check the first draw. If it tastes round and clean, carry on. If it tastes harsh or bitter, the rest is done, so set it down.
FAQ
Can you relight a cigar that has gone out?
- Yes. Within the same session it is completely fine, as long as you tap off the ash first and re-toast the foot briefly.
Does a relit cigar turn bitter?
- Only if you leave the old ash on or relight it too hot. Toasted cleanly, the flavour stays round.
Can you finish a cigar the next day?
- Technically yes, but the flavour suffers noticeably. A cigar left cold overnight usually tastes stale the next day. Better to start fresh.
Why does my cigar keep going out?
- Usually from long gaps between draws, tobacco that is too moist, or an uneven burn. Draw a little more regularly and check your storage humidity.
